The idea for these earrings came to me when I saw an ad for spiral hoop earrings, or earrings that don’t require a backing. These earrings were selling for almost 200 dollars. However, I was able to make them for under five dollars and within minutes! To make these, you just need to wrap a wire around a pencil to make a spiral.
If you’ve read my post on how to make your own spiral hoop earrings, you’ll notice that I’m using the exact same materials for this project that I used in that project. So if you make this project, you can play around with the wire to make different shapes and get creative. Another thing I want to add is that if you already have a double piercing, you can totally use this to fake a triple piercing or use as a comfortable earring that doesn’t have one of those annoying pointy backings.
For materials, you’ll need some pliers to cut the wire with as well as a pencil to help form the shape of the spiral. You’ll also need sandpaper or an old nail file to smooth down the sharp edges of the cut wire.
For this project, I used 20 gauge tarnish resistant brass wire from Michaels, which I got in the jewellery section. Gauge refers to the thickness of the wire, and 20 gauge is recommended for earrings since it’s not too thick yet still sturdy enough to hold a shape. I was blessed with non sensitive ears, so I am able to get away with using brass wire. However, if your ears tend to be more sensitive I would recommend getting wire made out of silver, which you can get at a local jewelry/bead store (there are lots in Vancouver). If you don’t want to make the trip out, you can also order silver plated wire from Amazon.
I love these earrings because they’re so practical and don’t get in the way/caught on anything when I’m on the move. Since you twist them in, it’s next to impossible to lose them because they’re less likely to twist out on their own.
Putting the earrings on is probably the most confusing part of the process (but still very easy). To do this, you just need to insert one end of the earring into your ear and twist it through. It should wrap around twice, leaving a look that makes it look like you have a double piercing, or two seperate hoop earrings on. To remove the earring, all you need to do is keep twisting the same way you twisted it through, and it should twist all the way out.
Here’s how to make it:
Materials
- 20 gauge wire
- pliers
- old nail file or sandpaper
- pencil
Instructions
- Using your pliers, cut off about an inch and a half of wire.
- Wrap the wire around the pencil twice clockwise, forming two spirals (use the photo below as a guide). Play around with it using your fingers or pliers to smooth out any dents/kinks in the wire.
- Slide the wire off of pencil and cut off the excess wire with the pliers.
- Smooth down the cut ends with a nail file or sandpaper.
- Repeat steps one-four for the next earring, making sure to wrap the wire around the pencil counterclockwise this time.
- All done! Don’t forget to clean your new earrings before using them 🙂
