Fall is now among us and with that comes department stores full of plastic fall decor. I love love love browsing through Michaels in the fall and checking out everything they have. However, I often think to myself “I could make that”, take a photo for inspo and forget about it.
This time however, I followed through! I made these paper pumpkins in 15 minutes and they are adorable. All you need is some printer paper, a glue stick, scissors and something to colour the stem with. You can also use cardstock for a more sturdy pumpkin but its not really a necessity. I did paint some old coloured cardstock I had for some custom colour and texture and it worked out well, but the white ones I made of printer paper were just as cute.
For the stem, all you need to do is cut out a thin strip of paper and colour it. I think a brown stem compliments the white pumpkins nicely but it’s also fun to play around and customize them! I opted to paint my stems with acrylic paint so that I could add a more woody texture to it but a felt pen or anything similar would work just as well.
These pumpkins are about three inches high and look cute strung together or stacked in a bowl. You could make bigger ones by tracing a larger template but it would require more paper than if you were to cut out smaller ones. DIY Paper Pumpkins
Materials
- 1 glue stick
- 3 or more pieces paper or more depending on size of stencil
- acrylic paint optional
- brown felt pen, crayon or pastel optional
- scissors
Instructions
- First, cut out a stencil for your pumpkin. Do this by drawing an oval with flat tops and bottoms like the one pictured here. To make the same size pumpkin as the ones pictured in this post, make your oval approximately three inches high and 5 inches wide. If you want a larger pumpkin, just scale up the size.
- Trace out your stencil onto your paper of choice and cut out your ovals.
- Make the stem by cutting out a thin strip of paper, about half an inch wide. Curl this around a pencil, paintbrush or anything similar to create a coil.
- Your stems should look like this.
- Now make the body of the pumpkin by folding each oval in half.
- After all of your ovals are folded, glue the top of one folded oval to the bottom of another. Do not glue together the middle!
- You should now have a three layered oval!
- Keep glueing the ovals together to form a stack. Be sure to only glue together the top of one to the bottom of another and to not glue together the middles.
- Now connect the stem by glueing it to the flat side of the top layer.
- Finally, take the top layer of your stack and glue it to the bottom layer. This should make your folds spread apart and reveal your pumpkin!
- Let your pumpkin dry for a couple minutes to ensure it won't fall apart and then enjoy :). These look great in a fall vignette or as a nifty centrepiece!
