Sigrid’s Minty Matcha Green Smoothie

  • by

If you hate classic green smoothies, this recipe is not your typical grassy-tasting healthy smoothie. My mom actually adapted this recipe from a local bistro by our house that unfortunately shut down recently. I asked her if I could publish her recipe and she said sure, but to make my readers know that she doesn’t actually measure her ingredients when making these, and that each one often comes out different than the last.

Similar to my momma, I don’t usually waste time measuring ingredients for smoothies and instead eyeball it (I mean, it’s a smoothie). For this recipe, I usually just put in what amount of stuff looks right, but if you’re really keen on making a perfect smoothie, I measured out the ingredients for this one in the recipe below.

The ingredients in this recipe are:

  • Banana
  • Apple
  • Fresh mint
  • Spinach
  • Matcha powder
  • Agave or honey
  • Oat milk or water

This smoothie rocks for a lot of reasons. It’s incredibly refreshing, and the flavours go together surprisingly well. If you’re not a fan of mint or matcha, ingredients can be left out to tailor it to your palate. I personally am a mint lover and like to toss in several fresh mint leaves.

Not to mention, matcha contains caffeine and this smoothie can double as your breakfast and morning cup of coffee if you’re in a rush to get out in the morning. Matcha is also high in EGCG, a plant compound known for potential positive health benefits such as reducing inflammation and preventing heart and brain disease.

The spinach and fruit make this smoothie jam-packed with vitamins and nutrients such as vitamin K, vitamin A, vitamin C and folate as well as manganese, magnesium, iron and vitamin B2. Thanks to the greek yogurt, this smoothie is also high in protein and you can add even more with supplements such as protein powder if you want.

Without further adieu, here is the recipe!

Sigrid’s Minty Matcha Green Smoothie

Total Time 5 minutes
Servings 1

Equipment

  • Blender

Ingredients

  • half a banana
  • half an apple
  • 5-10 fresh mint leaves or to taste
  • handful of spinach
  • 1/2 cup plain greek yogurt
  • 1 tsp matcha powder
  • 3 ice cubes
  • ¼-½ cup oat milk or water
  • squirt of agave or honey to taste, optional

Instructions

  • Place all ingredients in a blender
  • Blend on low speed then gradually increase the speed to high. Blend for about one minute or until fully combined.
  • Enjoy!

Notes

  • I use a Vitamix blender, which blends really well. If your blender is a bit problematic, you may need a combo of blending, stirring, and more liquid to really help blend all of the ingredients together
